Books Synopsis

The Beautiful Disaster and Walking Disaster phenomenon continues in the first heart-pounding new adult romance in The Maddox Brothers series. Fiercely independent Camille “Cami” Camlin gladly moved on from her childhood before it was over. She has held down a job since before she could drive, and moved into her own apartment after her freshman year of college. Now tending bar at The Red Door, Cami doesn’t have time for much else besides work and classes, until a trip to see her boyfriend is cancelled, leaving her with a first weekend off in almost a year. Trenton Maddox was the king of Eastern State University, dating co-eds before he even graduated high school. His friends wanted to be him, and women wanted to tame him, but after a tragic accident turned his world upside down, Trenton leaves campus to come to grips with the crushing guilt. Eighteen months later, Trenton is living at home with his widower father, and works full-time at a local tattoo parlor to help with the bills. Just when he thinks his life is returning to normal, he notices Cami sitting alone at a table at The Red. As the baby sister of four rowdy brothers, Cami believes she’ll have no problem keeping her new friendship with Trenton Maddox strictly platonic. But when a Maddox boy falls in love, he loves forever—even if she is the only reason their already broken family could fall apart. In the first installment of the Maddox Brothers books, readers can experience the rush they felt reading Beautiful Disaster for the first time, all over again.

Books Synopsis

Marriage has come a long way since biblical times. Women are no longer property, and practices like polygamy have long been rejected. The world is wealthier, healthier, and more able to find and form relationships than ever. So why are Christian congregations doing more burying than marrying today? Explanations for the recession in marriage range from the mathematical--more women in church than men--to the economic, and from the availability of sex to progressive politics. But perhaps marriage hasn't really changed at all. Instead, there is simply less interest in marriage in an era marked by technology, gender equality, and secularization. Mark Regnerus explores how today's Christians find a mate within a faith that esteems marriage but in a world that increasingly yawns at it. This book draws on in-depth interviews with nearly two hundred young-adult Christians from the United States, Mexico, Spain, Poland, Russia, Lebanon, and Nigeria, in order to understand the state of matrimony in global Christian circles today. Regnerus finds that marriage has become less of a foundation for a couple to build upon and more of a capstone. Meeting increasingly high expectations of marriage is difficult, though, in a free market whose logic reaches deep into the home today. The result is endemic uncertainty, slowing relationship maturation, and stalling marriage. But plenty of Christians innovate, resist, and wed, and this book argues that the future of marriage will be a religious one.

Books Synopsis

The New York Times bestselling author of Under the Southern Sky and the Peachtree Bluff series brings “her signature wit, charm, and heart” (Woman’s World) to this sweeping new novel following four women across generations, bound by a beautiful wedding veil and a connection to the famous Vanderbilt family. Four women. One family heirloom. A secret connection that will change their lives—and history as they know it. Present Day: Julia Baxter’s wedding veil, bequeathed to her great-grandmother by a mysterious woman on a train in the 1930s, has passed through generations of her family as a symbol of a happy marriage. But on the morning of her wedding day, something tells her that even the veil’s good luck isn’t enough to make her marriage last forever. Overwhelmed and panicked, she escapes to the Virgin Islands to clear her head. Meanwhile, her grandmother Babs is also feeling shaken. Still grieving the death of her beloved husband, she decides to move out of the house they once shared and into a retirement community. Though she hopes it’s a new beginning, she does not expect to run into an old flame, dredging up the same complicated emotions she felt a lifetime ago. 1914: Socialite Edith Vanderbilt is struggling to manage the luxurious Biltmore Estate after the untimely death of her cherished husband. With 250 rooms to oversee and an entire village dependent on her family to stay afloat, Edith is determined to uphold the Vanderbilt legacy—and prepare her free-spirited daughter Cornelia to inherit it—in spite of her family’s deteriorating financial situation. But Cornelia has dreams of her own. Asheville, North Carolina has always been her safe haven away from the prying eyes of the press, but as she explores more of the rapidly changing world around her, she’s torn between upholding tradition and pursuing the exciting future that lies beyond Biltmore’s gilded gates. In the vein of Therese Anne Fowler’s A Well-Behaved Woman and Jennifer Robson’s The Gown, The Wedding Veil brings to vivid life a group of remarkable women forging their own paths—and explores the mystery of a national heirloom lost to time.

Pick Big Little Lies meets Presumed Innocent in this “irresistible domestic drama” (Washington Post) from the New York Times bestselling author of Reconstructing Amelia, in which a woman’s brutal murder reveals the perilous compromises some couples make—and the secrets they keep—in order to stay together. Lizzie Kitsakis is working late when she gets the call. Grueling hours are standard at elite law firms like Young & Crane, but they’d be easier to swallow if Lizzie was there voluntarily. Until recently, she’d been a happily underpaid federal prosecutor. That job and her brilliant, devoted husband Sam—she had everything she’d ever wanted. And then, suddenly, it all fell apart. No. That’s a lie. It wasn’t sudden, was it? Long ago the cracks in Lizzie’s marriage had started to show. She was just good at averting her eyes. The last thing Lizzie needs right now is a call from an inmate at Rikers asking for help—even if Zach Grayson is an old friend. But Zach is desperate: his wife, Amanda, has been found dead at the bottom of the stairs in their Brooklyn brownstone. And Zach’s the primary suspect. As Lizzie is drawn into the dark heart of idyllic Park Slope, she learns that Zach and Amanda weren’t what they seemed—and that their friends, a close-knit group of fellow parents at the exclusive Brooklyn Country Day school, might be protecting troubling secrets of their own. In the end, she’s left wondering not only whether her own marriage can be saved, but what it means to have a good marriage in the first place.

Books Synopsis

A Happy and Informative Present: at the new Université de Sherbrooke, Pierre had developed a four-month teaching program for clinical nurses prior to their departure to the Canadian Far North where they would be in charge of a Nursing Station. In 1973, a group of them gave me as a parting gift the French translation of “The Scalpel and the Sword” by Ted Allen and Sydney Gordon (Toronto, 1952); the French version was by Jean Pare, 'Docteur Bethune' (Montreal, 1973). As new Canadians, we thought it odd that the French version should take 20 years to appear on the scene. We had been in Canada for 15 years. In 1975, Pierre's career led him to 1'hospitaldu Sacré-Coeur where Dr. Bethune worked for over three years (1933-1936), his first experience in a non-English environment before going to Spain and China where he died in 1939. He became my last model. During the last seven years of his life Dr Bethune was able to adapt in a masterful way to three completely different important complex situations on three different continents (January 1936 November 1939). On the social side, Joan became secretary of the Montreal-based Norman Bethune Foundation. A year later, Pierre became its fourth Chairman, eventually becoming responsible for a professional exchange program between Montreal and China, working most of the time at the Bethune International Peace Hospital in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province (19891994). Joan was responsible for a TESL program, Pierre for a medical teaching program. Note: Joan is the note-taker, keeping a daily agenda since 1960 without interruptions! Pierre took lots of pictures and accumulated written stuff all classified and in sequence, in about fifty tightly packed binders.

Books Synopsis

Born in 1922 in a poor section of Jersey City, New Jersey, to parents with only third grade educations, this is the life story of Gus Prinsell. In this autobiography, Gus starts by reflecting on his humble beginnings -- his earliest childhood memories are of poverty wrought by the Great Depression. His father was unemployed for a decade. Gus's parents never wavered in insisting that their children pursue an education. World War II started as he was entering his 20s, and he served his country in the US Navy. After becoming a "born again" Christian in the early 1940s and marrying Louise Bininger, he finished college and earned his medical doctor degree from Columbia University in 1952. From there, Gus went on to study surgery and tropical medicine. He then turned away from material gains and dedicated his life to medical missions in West Africa, where he moved with Louise and their four sons and opened the new Kamakwie Wesleyan Hospital in 1959. In 1964, Gus returned to the States where he served as a family physician in Western New York until his retirement. Gus still lives in Houghton, New York, with his wife of over 70 years, Louise. At the ages of 94 and 91, Gus and Louise now have seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Gus takes us through his life’s journey in his own words. Not only does he tell the story of his own life, but he effectively weaves in the stories of many of his family and friends. His trust in the Lord through faith has led Gus through his life of achievement. When asked to describe himself in one phrase, he defines himself as “a Christian missionary physician and humanitarian.” His life of dedication to God and mankind is an example for us all.

Books Synopsis

Although the end of the Cold War was greeted with great enthusiasm by people in the East and the West, the ensuing social and especially economic changes did not always result in the hoped-for improvements in people’s lives. This led to widespread disillusionment that can be observed today all across Eastern Europe. Not simply a longing for security, stability, and prosperity, this nostalgia is also a sense of loss regarding a specific form of sociability. Even some of those who opposed communism express a desire to invest their new lives with renewed meaning and dignity. Among the younger generation, it surfaces as a tentative yet growing curiosity about the recent past. In this volume scholars from multiple disciplines explore the various fascinating aspects of this nostalgic turn by analyzing the impact of generational clusters, the rural-urban divide, gender differences, and political orientation. They argue persuasively that this nostalgia should not be seen as a wish to restore the past, as it has otherwise been understood, but instead it should be recognized as part of a more complex healing process and an attempt to come to terms both with the communist era as well as the new inequalities of the post-communist era.

Books Synopsis

"Miz Suzie's Boy" is a remarkable book about a Negro boy, born into abject poverty during the Great Depression to a teenage mother. Hardships of the depression included shooting crows for meals and keeping hand-me-down shoes together with string and newspaper. Negroes in the town of West Munden, a few miles south of Norfolk, cared deeply for each other. Poverty was pervasive and the "old folks" talked incessantly about becoming millionaires, but children were unaware of the degree of how badly things really were. Together, families banded together to combat blatant racism and rise above the negative impact of the Ku Klux Klan. His early home training fostered a love of God, Country, and Family. He was taught to work hard, practice thrift, speak honestly and with integrity, maintain his individuality, and relentlessly pursue an education. Childhood was a happy time for Herman and he spent many hours playing with relatives, neighborhood children and "make believe" toys. Flora moved to an adjoining community, South Norfolk, when he was eleven, and made new friends. He joined the Boy Scouts and strictly lived by the Scout Oath and its precepts. This later helped to keep him mentally awake and morally straight. Friendship (puppy love) for a classmate hastened his efforts to enter the U.S. Army, as an under-aged youth with the hope of finding her in the Philippines. Flora entered the Army, trained at Aberdeen, Maryland and cavorted with prostitutes and pimps whenever he was granted leave. He journeyed overseas on a troopship with fifteen hundred soldiers. The boredom and tedium of the voyage was downplayed by the laughter, witty banter, and frequent exchange of incredible lies. Arriving overseas, he started his first job as a latrine orderly. Flora found the Army reasonably challenging, thrived, and became Acting First Sergeant of a medial detachment within months. Frequent interactions and frank discussions with long time career soldiers constantly reminded him of the need for a good education. He returned to Norfolk from the Army, finished his last year of high school and enrolled at Howard University. College was demanding of his mind and time during the week, and only the weekends were available for frolicking, football, fraternities, and girls. Beautiful young ladies consumed every spare moment until he identified and pursued "the one", a ministers' daughter. Together, they lovingly reared seven college educated, children. Herman pursued ownership of several businesses and finally decided to make his million dollars brokering real estate. He accepted an Executive Level position with the U.S. Department of Commerce, Office of Minority Business Enterprise (OMBE) where he patiently assisted national minority businesses with their growth and expansion. In a very poignant letter sent from Africa to his grandchildren and other grandchildren of the world he reflected on several world problems. encouraged them to diligently educate and prepare themselves for the next century and never lose sight of God, goals and a good life.

Books Synopsis

Rich Schaffer served the Lord for 20 years as a missionary pilot with the Sudan Interior Mission in Nigeria, West Africa. Harold Fuller wrote .. Great stuff, Rich. You have a very interesting writing style .. reconstructing conversation, describing vividly, building suspense. We’re enjoying the chapters as you send them. I knew you were an accomplished pilot, but had no idea of your writing skills. Glad you are now using them!” Flying with Rich at the controls was always okay. Although my heart at times pounded as the tiny Cessna faced a threatening tropical storm. I knew this matter-of fact guy of few words had the courage and professional experience to find a hole through or around the thunderheads and bring us out safely on the other side. And Rich always acknowledged that the Lord had given him the qualities that made him a top-rate pilot for Africa’s uncertain weather and questionable landing strips.” “ In this story about SIMAIR, Rich takes the reader through many an adventure that showed God’s hand to be on the Mission aircraft and its occupants. With vivid description and homey dialogue , Rich weaves an honest account how God took a little boy from a tarpaper shack in America’s Midwest and made him part of a team who brought the Gospel to the neglected interior of West Africa .. fullfilling his boyhood dream of flying. Down to earth humor, growing pains, high adventure, finding God in dry season and rainy-season tempest .. Rich holds the reader’s attention from pagecone to the story’s end.” W. Harold Fuller, Lit.D (SIM Nigeria Director for several years of the Shaffer’s ministry)
