Books Synopsis

The Chalice of Limerick is a historical novel about a dark period in the history of the people of Ireland leading up to the penal times (1695–1829) and its aftermath. It is a story of audaciousness and resilience. It shows the tenacity of a people of deep faith, willing to make extraordinary sacrifices during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. An estimated one million people died during the Great Famine which could have been avoided. Another two million migrated in search of a better life. The Great Famine was caused by a blight on the potato crop which extended for three years. In the laws of nature, any given crop can fail. The Irish people forced by oppression had become dependent on one crop. The population of Ireland at the time of the Great Famine was estimated at eight million. Yet the country was exporting enough food to feed twelve million. Our gratitude goes to the political leaders who rose to bring about change. Daniel O'Connell was responsible for the passage of the Catholic Emancipation Act 1829. The Land League was formed in 1878 to help struggling tenant farmers. It also sought to end landlordism. Charles Steward Parnell led the Irish Parliamentary Party (1888–1891). There were several people who gave their lives in martyrdom for their faith. The archbishop of Armagh, Oliver Plunkett, was executed on July 1, 1681. He was declared a saint by Pope Paul VI in 1975. He is the patron saint of peace and reconciliation. Bishop Turlough O'Brien, bishop of Limerick, was executed in October 1851 following the Siege of Limerick. Forty-nine Catholics from County Roscommon protested their loss of "due liberties" as citizens of Ireland and were executed for treason. Seventeen of these were beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1992.

The chronicle occurs three hundred years after the fall of the sorcerer of the Lachinor Morlecainen and his daughter Chalar and seven centuries before the Deathquest to Parallan. The Aivendar family has wisely and justly ruled Donothor, but fantastic creatures roam the land and large areas of Donothor remained unexplored. The Light Sorceress Knarra keeps an uneasy eye toward the Iron Mountains, the imposing eastern border to the growing civilization, and the Lachinor, the great swamp to the south. Attacks by an unlikely alliance of creatures from the Iron Mountains shatter the fragile peace and terrorize Donothor. Knarra enlists the mysterious Dark Sorcerer Roscoe, the dwarves of Hillesdale, a red-haired elf, a legendary dwarfish fighter, and the Rangers of Lyndyn to battle the alliance of red giants, ice giants, ogres, two-headed Ettins, troglodytes, dragons, and stranger ilk. A relic of evil rests in the Iron Mountains. What role does the artifact play in the future of Donothor? What evil unites the denizens of the Iron Mountains?

Books Synopsis

An excerpt, "Miraculous power emanates when wisdom and moral strength and moral discipline determine words and actions that resonate with harmony of eternal morals as opposed to immediate temptations of egoic desire. Miraculous power emanates when we comfort or care for someone in need. Miraculous power of forgiveness can transform a life. Miraculous power of hope can generate a million possibilities. Miraculous power of honesty can cleanse guilt. Miraculous power of atonement can eliminate karmic debt. While miraculous power of faith can move mountains, we possess the miraculous inability to understand that faith is not “one size fits all.” There are many paths to the one Truth. Whether Christianity or Islam, religious faith can cause violence and strife among us. Miraculous power of reason can acknowledge that felicity and adversity are the keys of the same piano from which the harmony of life is comprised, and one Composer wrote the symphony. A miracle of empathy can bestow freedom on those who need understanding and knowledge upon those who endeavor to understand. A miracle of affectionate love can transform lover and loved. A physical expression of love can fashion a portal (conception) through which an infinite soul may once again choose to incarnate in order to experience the awe and mystery of life on this small planet amidst the backwaters of the universe. All these powers to be sure, rest within the Chalice of Miracles, the Holy Grail of our bodies that cradles conscience and nurtures within us a creative impulse that impels us toward Divinity."

Books Synopsis

Books Synopsis

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE • A searing, post-apocalyptic novel about a father and son's fight to survive, this "tale of survival and the miracle of goodness only adds to McCarthy's stature as a living master. It's gripping, frightening and, ultimately, beautiful" (San Francisco Chronicle). A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other. The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, "each the other's world entire," are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.

Books Synopsis

I am Meredith Gentry, P.I., solving cases in Los Angeles, far from the peril and deception of my real home–because I am also Princess Meredith, heir to the darkest throne faerie has to offer. The Unseelie Court infuses me with its power. But at what price does such magic come? How much of my human side will I have to give up, and how much of the sinister side of faerie will I have to embrace? To sit on a throne that has ruled through bloodshed and violence for centuries, I might have to become that which I dread the most. Enemies watch my every move. My cousin Cel strives to have me killed even now from his prison cell. But not all the assassination attempts are his. Some Unseelie nobles have waited centuries for my aunt Andais, Queen of Air and Darkness, to become weak enough that she might be toppled from her throne. Enemies unforeseen move against us–enemies who would murder the least among us. The threat will drive us to allow human police into faerie for the first time in our history. I need my allies now more than ever, especially since fate will lead me into the arm of Mistral, Master of Storms, the queen’s new captain of her guard. Our passion will reawaken powers long forgotten among the warriors of the sidhe. Pain and pleasure await me–and danger, as well, for some at that court seek only death. I will find new joys with the butterfly-winged demi-fey. My guards and I will show all of faerie that violence and sex are as popular among the sidhe as they are among the lesser fey of our court. The Darkness will weep, and Frost will comfort him. The gentlest of my guards will find new strength and break my heart. Passions undreamed of await us–and my enemies gather, for the future of both courts of faerie begins to unravel.
