Books Synopsis

For anyone who's ever asked "Why can't we have a Christmas tree?" comes a lighthearted story about being Jewish during the holiday season—by actress Amanda Peet! Rachel Rosenstein is determined to celebrate Christmas this year—and the fact that her family is Jewish is not going to stop her. In a series of hilarious and heartwarming mishaps, Rachel writes a letter to Santa explaining her cause, pays him a visit at the mall, and covertly decorates her house on Christmas Eve (right down to latkes for Santa and his reindeer). And while Rachel may wrestle with her culture, customs, and love of sparkly Christmas ornaments, she also comes away with a brighter understanding of her own identity and of the gift of friends and family. Inspired by actress Amanda Peet's experience with her own children, Dear Santa, Love, Rachel Rosenstein is sure to be a new holiday classic! "Will help introduce young readers to other cultures while allowing them to preserve the magic of their own."—Booklist "Actress Peet and her friend/coauthor Troyer, both newcomers to children’s books, handle Rachel’s obsession and her family’s strong sense of religious identity with equal empathy and humor."—Publishers Weekly "There’s lots of humor in the text and in the lively, scribbly, colorful illustrations. But the authors wisely don’t gloss over Rachel’s feelings—which can be common for anyone who doesn’t celebrate Christmas that time of year, a notion that steers the text toward a happy, multi-culti ending."—The Horn Book

Books Synopsis

Dylan Thomas was one of the most extraordinary poetic talents of the twentieth century. Poems such as 'Do not go gentle into that good night' regularly top polls of the nation's favourites and his much-loved play Under Milk Wood has never been out of print. Thomas lived a life that was rarely without incident and died a death that has gone down in legend as the epitome of Bohemian dissoluteness. In The Three Lives of Dylan Thomas, journalist Hilly Janes explores that life and its extraordinary legacy through the eyes of her father, the artist Alfred Janes, who was a member of Thomas's inner circle and painted the poet at three key moments: in 1934, 1953 and, posthumously, 1964. Using these portraits as focal points, and drawing on a personal archive that includes drawings, diaries, letters and new interviews with omas's friends and descendants, The Three Lives of Dylan Thomas plots the poet's tempestuous journey from his birthplace in Swansea to his early death in a New York hospital in 1953. In this innovative and powerful narrative, Hilly Janes paints her own portrait: one that ventures beneath Thomas's reputation as a feckless, disloyal, boozy Welsh bard to reveal a much more complex character.

Books Synopsis

Jimmy Carter remembers Christmas in Plains, Georgia, the source of spiritual strength, respite, friendship, and vacation fun in this charming portrait. In a beautifully rendered portrait, Jimmy Carter remembers the Christmas days of his Plains boyhood—the simplicity of family and community gift-giving, his father’s eggnog, the children’s house decorations, the school Nativity pageant, the fireworks, Luke’s story of the birth of Christ, and the poignancy of his black neighbors’ poverty. Later, away at Annapolis, he always went home to Plains, and during his Navy years, when he and Rosalynn were raising their young family, they spent their Christmases together recreating for their children the holiday festivities of their youth. Since the Carters returned home to Plains for good, they have always been there on Christmas Day, with only one exception in forty-eight years: In 1980, with Americans held hostage in Iran, Jimmy, Rosalynn, and Amy went by themselves to Camp David, where they felt lonely. Amy suggested that they invite the White House staff and their families to join them and to celebrate. Nowadays the Carters’ large family is still together at Christmastime, offering each other the gifts and the lifelong rituals that mark this day for them. With the novelist’s eye that enchanted readers of his memoir An Hour Before Daylight, Jimmy Carter has written another American classic, in the tradition of Truman Capote’s A Christmas Memory and Dylan Thomas’s A Child’s Christmas in Wales.

Books Synopsis

1998 New York Public Library Best Book for the Teen Age New York is seemingly the center of the universe during the Christmas season, beginning with Santa's arrival in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and culminating with the dropping of the ball in Times Square on New Year's Eve. And why not? After all, New York is the birthplace of electric Christmas tree lights, Lionel trains, F. A. O. Schwarz, "White Christmas," and, of course, Santa Claus. In Christmas in New York, Daniel Pool takes the reader on a tour of present-day New York Christmas attractions (the Rockefeller Center Tree, the store windows, the shows, the songs, the smells.) He tells little-known facts and stories about the history of Christmas in New York (how Maurice Sendak's career started designing F. A. O. Schwarz windows; how Guy Lombardo's "Auld Lang Syne" became the official New Year's song; a complete "Santology"). And finally, there is a section on "The Ghosts of Christmas Past"--long-time New York Christmas traditions that have fallen by the wayside. A marvelous mingling of the now and then, Pool's book, with fifty unique photographs and a characteristic biting wit, conveys the true New York Christmas spirit.

Books Synopsis

A funny and heart-warming tribute to Canada’s most famous small town, and its most celebrated humourist, Stephen Leacock. Many Canadians grew up in small towns, or at least in neighbourhoods that acted like small towns. But what if you grew up in Canada’s most famous small town—Stephen Leacock’s Mariposa? This was the world that journalist Jamie Lamb was raised in, the actual place that inspired Leacock’s Canadian classic, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town, over a century ago. The Mariposa of Lamb’s time was slightly different, yet it still embodied the heart and soul, the eccentricities and the bizarre local customs of Leacock’s sketches. Christmas in Mariposa is a celebration of that town and its people. It tells of secret gardens, special rinks, oddball hotels, remarkable foods, fast boats and sunken aircraft, Christmas Eve fireworks, and the best Christmas office party in the country. It describes a place where Christmas could be celebrated in summer with a Baby Jesus look-alike contest, Canada’s only officially sanctioned reindeer races, and the Three Wise Men arriving with gifts by parachute. It transports readers to a world where where Gordie Howe once dropped by for a skate, and Glenn Gould regularly came to eat a well-done steak and six Parker House rolls slathered in butter at a Chinese restaurant. Jamie Lamb’s Mariposa is timeless and quintessentially Canadian.

Books Synopsis

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,5, University of Stuttgart, course: Cultural Seminar, language: English, abstract: "Christmas... that magic blanket that wraps itself about us, that something so intangible that it is like a fragrance. It may weave a spell of nostalgia. Christmas may be a day of feasting, or of prayer, but always it will be a day of remembrance, a day in which we think of everything we have ever loved." This quote by Augusta E. Rundel illustrates so well the innermost feelings of the speaker in Dylan Thomas' A Child's Christmas in Wales, who reminisces about the most beautiful time of the year he passed with family and friends. However, he does not just recount facts in an emotionally detached way; and it is the aim of this term paper to analyze the confounding of the adult and the child speaker, that is, the former being entirely plunged in his memories surrounding him “like a fragrance”, he seems to actually be the child he was, reliving some scenes again. First of all, after having given some information about the text version of Thomas' work, I will introduce Gérard Genette's theory of narratology, and mainly focus on the distinction between narration and focalization. This subtle difference, as well as other terminology referring to the question of perspective, is very enriching, as it permits to localize the narrator's point of view and involvement, to understand the story's organization, and eventually, to reflect on the how and why of the blurring of boundaries between the adult speaker of the here and now (at the moment of speaking), and the child speaker experiencing the events. I will argue that those two are intertwined, with several gradations more or less explicit in text and film. Next, the way of narrating, the style, and linguistic issues will be examined, in order to attribute certain expressions or sentence structures either rather to the adult, or to the child. Of course it is not always possible to draw a clear-cut line, but nevertheless, there are passages which I believe to be revealing when arguing in favor of a perspective. It is crucial not to forget that the latter does not stay static, but that we can detect shifts of position throughout the story. This gives reason to dwell on some scenes in further detail. The second part of my work will deal with the film A Child's Christmas in Wales. As above, I will begin with some general remarks; then I would like to investigate the impact of the camera position because a stage director, by means of making different choices concerning distance, or angle of vision, can influence the spe.

These essays were not written for publication, but as true correspondence with a circle of friends from many walks of life. Waynes hope was that a dialog would ensue in which everyone, including himself, would learn something new in the New Year. The topics are diverse: touching politics, faith, society, war, family and human nature. Waynes self-imposed rule was that they be written in one sitting, but they are far from spontaneous outbursts of opinion or perfunctory pabulum. His clear prose and thoughtful analysis leads the reader through even the most contentious topics so that even if one disagrees with his destination, you cant help but respect the fairness and balance you met on the journey. A young American soldier stationed in Germany in 1952 meets a British girl in London. He romances her during their first day in a glorious pub crawl while accompanied by his army buddy. The next day, they enjoy the playing fields of Eton and a band concert for the queen at Windsor Castle. When they bid each other goodbye at Euston Station, they are already infatuated. They have seen each other for less than two days, never alone. She tries to visit him in Germany, but travel restrictions for the trip cause her to cancel. Angry over being stood up, the soldier and his buddy visit Ireland, Wales, and even London; and he does not call her. Returning to the barracks in Germany, he finds her telegram that had arrived too late. The two cannot meet before his being sent back to the states for separation from the military. They exchange letters for four years, trying to reunite either in England or America. But problems intervene, including a girl to whom the soldier had been engaged to before his London adventure and a conniving woman. He and the British girl struggle during his residency year at Stanford University to qualify for his PhD. Their greatest problem is pregnancy.
