Books Synopsis

Fans of Michael Connelly and Steve Cavanagh’s courtroom dramas with plenty of twists and turns will love this first entry in the Cold Case Investigation series. It’s an understatement to say Cold Case Detective Lauren Riley and defense attorney Frank Violanti don’t get along. While on opposite sides in the courtroom Frank’s called Lauren a sloppy cop he doesn’t trust. She considers him an obnoxious bully. Now Frank needs her help: he wants to hire her as a private investigator. Frank’s eighteen-year-old godson, David, is accused of the rape and brutal murder of a local woman. Frank’s convinced David’s being set up and he needs Lauren’s help to prove it. Lauren doesn’t want to get involved in another jurisdiction’s homicide case, but things change when she learns the arresting officer is the one man Lauren hates more than Frank . . . her abusive former fiancé, Joe Wheeler. After meeting David, Lauren’s determined to prove his innocence and stand up to Joe in one fell swoop.

Books Synopsis

After a terrible summer of blood and fire, scout Seamus Donegan finally has reason to rejoice: his wife, Samantha, has given birth to his first son. But the time to celebrate new life is short . . . for the old business of death continues. Phil Sheridan has gathered his officers at Fort Laramie for a war council to prepare the winter campaign. His objective: capture Crazy Horse, the elusive Sioux warrior chief whose exploits have put the U.S. cavalry to shame. Sending his scouts ahead—men such as Seamus Donegan and the legendary Yellowstone Kelly—Sheridan will march his armies north into the valley of the Red Fork of the Crazy Woman Creek . . . and into a battle that will prove as brutal and bitter as the killing winter winds. Praise for Terry C. Johnston “Johnston is an authentic American treasure.”—Loren D. Estleman, author of Edsel “Terry C. Johnston has emerged as the great frontier historical novelist of his generation.”—Paul Andrew Hutton, author of Phil Sheridan and His Army

Books Synopsis

In the stew and dazzle of New York City, savvy, irreverent Fritz Malone–who Susan Isaacs called “the perfect balance of noir P.I. and decent guy”–is embroiled in a string of grisly murders that drags him behind the lurid headlines into the tangled affairs of some the city’s most beautiful people and their ugly truths. When two women linked with charismatic late-night TV personality Marshall Fox are found brutally slain in Central Park, Fox becomes the prime suspect and is charged with the murders. At the tabloid trial, one of Fox’s ex-lovers, Robin Burrell, is called to testify–and is instantly thrust into the media’s harsh spotlight. Shaken by a subsequent onslaught of hate mail, Robin goes to Fritz Malone for help. Malone has barely begun to investigate when Robin is found sadistically murdered in her Upper West Side brownstone, hands and feet shackled and a shard of mirror protruding from her neck. But it’s another gory detail that confounds both Malone and Megan Lamb, the troubled NYPD detective officially assigned to the case. Though Fox is in custody the third victim’s right hand has been placed over her heart and pinned with a four-inch nail, just as in the killings he’s accused of. Is this a copycat murder, or is the wrong man on trial? Teaming up with Detective Lamb, Malone delves deeper into Fox’s past, unpeeling the layers of the media darling’s secret life and developing an ever-increasing list of suspects for Robin’s murder. When yet another body turns up in Central Park, the message is clear: Get too close to Fox and get ready to die. And Malone is getting too close. In Cold Day in Hell, Richard Hawke has again given readers a tale about the dark side of the big city, a thriller that moves with breakneck speed toward a conclusion that is as shocking as it is unforgettable. Praise for Richard Hawke’s Speak of the Devil “Richard Hawke has managed what some writers spend a lifetime trying to accomplish: He has come up with a character and place that should entertain in countless stories to come.” –Rocky Mountain News “Fast-moving, first-rate . . . Hawke’s plot grabs us by the throat. . . . He keeps the suspense mounting.” –The Washington Post “[A] bang-bang thriller . . . We are absolutely powerless to stop reading.” –Chicago Tribune “Mr. Hawke’s [novel] tours the city . . . with unusual streetwise panache . . . but this isn’t a book that coasts on its urban geography. It lives by its wits, and its wits would work anywhere.” –The New York Times “A deftly paced debut that crackles and pops from page 1.” –Booklist (starred review) “Thrill-a-minute pacing and inspired plot twists.” –Newsday “[An] amazing thriller . . . Hawke’s dialogue is sharp and snappy and the plot moves with all the energy of New York City.” –Cleveland Plain Dealer “Hawke razzle-dazzles us with . . . bada-bing narration and quirky, well-drawn characters.” –The Boston Globe “[Packed] with a breathless pace and hair-pin turns.” –South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Books Synopsis

I’ve been told to go to Hell more times than I can count. But this time I’m actually going. My name’s Bobby Dollar, sometimes known as Doloriel, and of course, Hell isn’t a great place for someone like me—I’m an angel. They don’t like my kind down there, not even the slightly fallen variety. But they have my girlfriend, who happens to be a beautiful demon named Casimira, Countess of Cold Hands. Why does an angel have a demon girlfriend? Well, certainly not because it helps my career. She’s being held hostage by one of the nastiest, most powerful demons in all of the netherworld—Eligor, Grand Duke of Hell. He already hates me, and he’d like nothing better than to get his hands on me and rip my immortal soul right out of my borrowed but oh-so-mortal body. But wait, it gets better! Not only do I have to sneak into Hell, make my way across thousands of miles of terror and suffering to reach Pan- demonium, capital of the fiery depths, but then I have to steal Caz right out from under Eligor’s burning eyes and smuggle her out again, past demon soldiers, hellhounds, and all the murderous creatures imprisoned there for eternity. And even if I somehow manage to escape Hell, I’m also being stalked by an undead psychopath named Smyler who’s been following me for weeks. Oh, and did I mention that he can’t be killed? So if I somehow survive Hell, elude the Grand Duke and all his hideous minions and make it back to the real world, I’ll still be the most hunted soul in Creation. But at least I’ll have Caz. Gotta have something to look forward to, right? So just pour me that damn drink, will you? I’ve got somewhere to go.

Books Synopsis

The third book in the Angelique De Xavier series, from author Christopher Brookmyre. If society has the B-list celebrities it deserves, it now has a killer to match. Except that Simon Darcourt is a great deal more successful in his career choice than the average talent show contestant. He's also got the media taped - by the simple expedient of by-passing them completely and posting real-time coverage of his killings on the internet. He's got viewing figures to make the world's TV executives gasp in envy, and he's pulling the voyeuristic strings of every viewer by getting them to 'vote' to keep his captives alive. Angelique De Xavier, his previous nemesis, is drafted onto the police team trying to bring this one-man celebrity hate-fest to an end. But she can't do it alone, she needs the magical skills of her lover, only she doesn't know where Zal is and meanwhile a whole load of celebs are, literarly, dying to be famous. An intelligent satire, a thriller with exhilarating pace - Christopher Brookmyre at his best.

Books Synopsis

The Paris-Roubaix Classic. 273 kilometres of torment across the bone-crunching pavé of northern France. In 1976 the celebrated Danish film director, Jørgen Leth, embarked on an ambitious project to capture the spirit of this spectacular and cruel one-day race. The resulting film, A Sunday in Hell, has become the most admired cycling documentary of all time, and its revolutionary camera and sound techniques have forever changed the way the sport is viewed on screen. The film centres around legends including Eddie Merkx, Roger De Vlaeminck, Freddie Maertens and Francesco Moser, capturing not just their experiences from the saddle, but also the mood of a nation and its relationship with the most punishing of the Spring Classics. Sunday in Hell looks at the men, the method and the places behind the film. It observes the creativity of Leth and his collaborators, explores the lives of riders such as unlikely winner Marc Demeyer and revisits locations which have changed little to this day.

Books Synopsis

Prisoners suffer in every conflict, but American servicemen captured during the Korean War faced a unique ordeal. Like prisoners in other wars, these men endured harsh conditions and brutal mistreatment at the hands of their captors. In Korea, however, they faced something new: a deliberate enemy program of indoctrination and coercion designed to manipulate them for propaganda purposes. Most Americans rejected their captors’ promise of a Marxist paradise, yet after the cease fire in 1953, American prisoners came home to face a second wave of attacks. Exploiting popular American fears of communist infiltration, critics portrayed the returning prisoners as weak-willed pawns who had been “brainwashed” into betraying their country. The truth was far more complicated. Following the North Korean assault on the Republic of Korea in June of 1950, the invaders captured more than a thousand American soldiers and brutally executed hundreds more. American prisoners who survived their initial moments of captivity faced months of neglect, starvation, and brutal treatment as their captors marched them north toward prison camps in the Yalu River Valley. Counterattacks by United Nations forces soon drove the North Koreans back across the 38th Parallel, but the unexpected intervention of Communist Chinese forces in November of 1950 led to the capture of several thousand more American prisoners. Neither the North Koreans nor their Chinese allies were prepared to house or feed the thousands of prisoners in their custody, and half of the Americans captured that winter perished for lack of food, shelter, and medicine. Subsequent communist efforts to indoctrinate and coerce propaganda statements from their prisoners sowed suspicion and doubt among those who survived. Relying on memoirs, trial transcripts, debriefings, declassified government reports, published analysis, and media coverage, plus conversations, interviews, and correspondence with several dozen former prisoners, William Clark Latham Jr. seeks to correct misperceptions that still linger, six decades after the prisoners came home. Through careful research and solid historical narrative, Cold Days in Hell provides a detailed account of their captivity and offers valuable insights into an ongoing issue: the conduct of prisoners in the hands of enemy captors and the rules that should govern their treatment.

Books Synopsis

The author of Men Explain Things to Me explores the moments of altruism and generosity that arise in the aftermath of disaster Why is it that in the aftermath of a disaster? whether manmade or natural?people suddenly become altruistic, resourceful, and brave? What makes the newfound communities and purpose many find in the ruins and crises after disaster so joyous? And what does this joy reveal about ordinarily unmet social desires and possibilities? In A Paradise Built in Hell, award-winning author Rebecca Solnit explores these phenomena, looking at major calamities from the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco through the 1917 explosion that tore up Halifax, Nova Scotia, the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, 9/11, and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. She examines how disaster throws people into a temporary utopia of changed states of mind and social possibilities, as well as looking at the cost of the widespread myths and rarer real cases of social deterioration during crisis. This is a timely and important book from an acclaimed author whose work consistently locates unseen patterns and meanings in broad cultural histories.

"From the Bible through Dante and up to Treblinka and Guantánamo Bay, here is a rich source for nightmares." --The New York Times Book Review Three thousand years of visions of Hell, from the ancient Near East to modern America From the Hebrew Bible's shadowy realm of Sheol to twenty-first-century visions of Hell on earth, The Penguin Book of Hell takes us through three thousand years of eternal damnation. Along the way, you'll take a ferry ride with Aeneas to Hades, across the river Acheron; meet the Devil as imagined by a twelfth-century Irish monk--a monster with a thousand giant hands; wander the nine circles of Hell in Dante's Inferno, in which gluttons, liars, heretics, murderers, and hypocrites are made to endure crime-appropriate torture; and witness the debates that raged in Victorian England when new scientific advances cast doubt on the idea of an eternal hereafter. Drawing upon religious poetry, epics, theological treatises, stories of miracles, and accounts of saints' lives, this fascinating volume of hellscapes illuminates how Hell has long haunted us, in both life and death.

Books Synopsis

“The greatest epic poem in the English language . . . A work of unparalleled imaginative genius that shapes English literature even now.” —Benjamin Ramm, BBC.com Written in blank verse by the seventeenth-century English poet John Milton, this “epic of over 10,000 lines is a dramatic, imaginative version of Satan’s rebellion against God and of Adam and Eve’s eviction from Eden. Set at the beginnings of human history, it shifts us across an expansive universe: Heaven at the top—Earth dangling from it—and Hell at the bottom, a dark gloomy Chaos in between. It tells the story of divine creation, human ambition and hopeless rebellion, but is perhaps most famous for its presentation of Satan, an intensely deep character” (New Statesman). “Milton’s cosmos is a visionary unfolding and enfolding of the biblical map with others from his vast mental bookstore. Paradise Lost itself is a densely intertextual amalgam of fictional worlds, made newly brilliant by the imagination behind the poet’s now sightless eyes, embodied in blank verse at its most vigorously muscled. . . . That verse flows, twists, ripples and thunders like a team of miraculously tireless and synchronised horses. It’s the perfect body-mind work-out.” —The Guardian

Books Synopsis

From the award-winning historian, Saul David, the riveting narrative of the heroic US troops, bonded by the brotherhood and sacrifice of war, who overcame enormous casualties to pull off the toughest invasion of WWII's Pacific Theater -- and the Japanese forces who fought with tragic desperation to stop them. With Allied forces sweeping across Europe and into Germany in the spring of 1945, one enormous challenge threatened to derail America's audacious drive to win the world back from the Nazis: Japan, the empire that had extended its reach southward across the Pacific and was renowned for the fanaticism and brutality of its fighters, who refused to surrender, even when faced with insurmountable odds. Taking down Japan would require an unrelenting attack to break its national spirit, and launching such an attack on the island empire meant building an operations base just off its shores on the island of Okinawa. The amphibious operation to capture Okinawa was the largest of the Pacific War and the greatest air-land-sea battle in history, mobilizing 183,000 troops from Seattle, Leyte in the Philippines, and ports around the world. The campaign lasted for 83 blood-soaked days, as the fighting plumbed depths of savagery. One veteran, struggling to make sense of what he had witnessed, referred to the fighting as the "crucible of Hell." Okinawan civilians died in the tens of thousands: some were mistaken for soldiers by American troops; but as the US Marines spearheading the invasion drove further onto the island and Japanese defeat seemed inevitable, many more civilians took their own lives, some even murdering their own families. In just under three months, the world had changed irrevocably: President Franklin D. Roosevelt died; the war in Europe ended; America's appetite for an invasion of Japan had waned, spurring President Truman to use other means -- ultimately atomic bombs -- to end the war; and more than 250,000 servicemen and civilians on or near the island of Okinawa had lost their lives. Drawing on archival research in the US, Japan, and the UK, and the original accounts of those who survived, Crucible of Hell tells the vivid, heart-rending story of the battle that changed not just the course of WWII, but the course of war, forever.

“[An] amazing thriller . . . [Richard] Hawke’s dialogue is sharp and snappy and the plot moves with all the energy of New York City.”—Cleveland Plain Dealer A child of Hell’s Kitchen and the bastard son of a beloved former police commissioner, Fritz Malone is all too familiar with New York City’s rougher side. So when a gunman opens fire at the crowded Thanksgiving Day parade, Fritz steps into action, giving chase. He then learns that someone dubbed “Nightmare” has been taunting the city’s leaders for weeks—and there’s more carnage to come, unless the city meets the madman’s impossible demands. The nervous police need an outside man, and Fritz fits the bill. Racing furiously against time, Fritz finds himself confounded by Nightmare’s multiple masks and messengers. But the dark story behind the story soon begins to emerge, and when Fritz zeroes in on the terrible truth, the killer retaliates by making things personal. Now Fritz must grapple with his deepest fear: Sometimes nightmares really do come true. Books Synopsis

"Paul Hutton’s study of Phil Sheridan in the West is authoritative, readable, and an important contribution to the literature of westward expansion. Although headquartered in Chicago, Sheridan played a crucial role in the opening of the West. His command stretched from the Missouri to the Rockies and from Mexico to Canada, and all the Indian Wars of the Great Plains fell under his direction. Hutton ably narrates and interprets Sheridan’s western career from the perspective of the top command rather than the battlefield leader. His book is good history and good reading."–Robert M. Utley

Books Synopsis

A riveting tour de force by Canada’s leading military historian about the heroic Black Watch’s fight for survival at Verrières Ridge Centred around one of Canada’s most storied regiments, Seven Days in Hell tells the epic tale of the bloody battle for Verrières Ridge, a dramatic saga that unfolded just weeks after one of Canada’s greatest military triumphs of the Second World War. O’Keefe takes us on a heart-pounding journey at the sharp end of combat during the infamous Normandy campaign, when more than 300 Black Watch Highlanders from across Canada, the United States, Great Britain and the Allied world found themselves embroiled in mortal combat against elite Waffen-SS units and grizzled Eastern Front veterans. Only a handful walked away. Pinned down as the result of strategic blunders and the fog of war, the men were thrust into a nightmare where station, rank, race and religion mattered little and only character won the day. Drawing on formerly classified documents and rare first-person testimony from the men who fought on the front lines, O’Keefe follows the footsteps of the ghosts of Normandy, giving a voice yet again to the men who sacrificed everything in the summer of 1944.

After serving ten years in prison for manslaughter, former Skuldmen motorcycle club president Landon “Blues” McKendry is released on parole. Instead of using violence to make his mark in the world, he is now armed with a university degree in architecture and a new guiding light—Buddhist philosophy. The biker is on a mission to reunite with his fourteen-year-old daughter Justine, the only surviving member of his family, but a restraining order and condition of parole prohibits Blues from seeing her. The restraining order, put in place by the maternal grandparents who have raised the girl since the death of her mother and brother, mandates that Blues will return to jail if he contacts the teenager. Appearing to lead an exemplary lifestyle, Blues has hardly become a model citizen. As he tries to rebuild his life, he crosses paths with bikers who have anything but his best interest at heart. The biker breaks parole by contacting his daughter, and learns in the process that she harbors a deep hatred for him, as he begins the long, hard journey to reconnect with the only family he has left.

Books Synopsis

Licketyn-Split I A Novel From Nebraska. By J. Gordon Schrempp. Sometimes fictions appeal is its ability to carry us to worlds known and unknown giving us an escape from the boredom or pressures of daily life. At other times, fiction is at its very best when it takes us to territories we know intimately. It provides us with a mirror, giving us insight into our own lives and takes us back to our own past and uncovers deeply buried conflicts and desires long forgotten. This is what Dean Arnold the main character of Lickety-Split does for the reader. It is through his character that the reader can connect with his past. Through a brilliant character portrayal, Schrempp a first time author, manages to illuminate our own past and take us to areas long buried in our consciousness. Areas many of us would like to relive or in some cases hope to forget. Dean Arnold lives on a farm in Northeastern Nebraska with his parents and two brothers. Although the setting of this character driven novel is in the early 50s the story is timeless. Dean spends a great deal of time and nervous energy coping with a dominating alcoholic father, the fear of a depraved school bully, and the baffling experience of a blossoming first love. The latter, resides mostly in his imagination. To escape reality Dean finds solace in a giant sycamore tree on highway 20 where he watches traffic heading east to Chicago and west to California. It is here where his imagination sores and all his conflicts dissolve temporarily. The passing humanity on Highway 20 gives him hope and a vision for a better existence. When his whiskey-drinking father decides to sell the farm to buy Beckers Bar in Wynot, his world is driven deeper into chaos. The bizarre characters he meets in the Bar alter his attitude and give him experiences with the seamy side of life. Here, in a strange way, he finds the relief he desires. He learns that alcohol can give him temporary relief but he only falls deeper into trouble. Salvation comes from a boxer turned priest at the local Catholic Church where Dean is a mass server. Father Logue takes him under his wing and begins to teach him basic lessons in boxing to give him a sense of self-esteem that he hopes will build the confidence he lacks and a belief that happiness and pride come from within ones self. Just as Deans confidence begins to build he accidentally discovers a dark and heinous secret in the priest, the one man he was just beginning to trust. This discovery comes just about the time his younger brother Ernie dies of leukemia. Although leukemia was the disease that killed him it was pneumonia that brought it on. Two weeks prior to his death, Dean had taken Ernie on a motorcycle ride in the cool morning air. His mother, Elizabeth, out of sadness at the loss of her beautiful son blames part of his death on Dean. This final disgrace is the last straw for Dean. When school gets out for the summer Dean feels he needs to escape. His dad is consumed with keeping the bar business going (with the death of her beloved son his wife stopped cooking meals for customers) and the death of Ernie. These circumstances give Dean the power he needs to make some plans. A visit to his sycamore tree gives him a solution. He knows what he has to do. Schrempp allows his readers, through Dean to explore what can happen when desperation in its darkest form gives way to solutions that can be lived with and once found give us hope and a measure of joy.

Books Synopsis

Volume One of No Matter What told of the authors childhood and of the many experiences that prepared him for a lifetime of work with troubled kids and adults. The author admitted to being a mountain man and a cowboy, and Volume One blended those two lifestyles into his work building the Bar D ranch for boys. Volume One closed with the hint of an approaching political storm with the state and a mad womans vengeful determination to close the Bar D. Volume Two of No Matter What picks up the authors story where the political storm grows into a full and fiery fury leaving little but ashes and desolation. The author says of the fury: The ornery blister won the battle, but she didnt win the war. After all, she did not have the power to take a life. Oh, she muddied the waters some but she couldnt stop the flow. Volume Two shares many traumatic and often humorous stories of a multitude of young people who have inhabited the authors life. He shares their stories and many of the secrets leading to their getting well. In 1998 during open heart surgery, the author moved in and out of a near death experience. He says it was not a near death experience because his medical records said he was dead. The author believes the experience taught him many things which he cannot share at this time. He did, however, recover enough to finish his long and distinguished career as a mental therapist. The author and his wife, Jenenne, now live in Angel Valley with their faithful dog, Pepper, and their many horses. This is the last word the author will write about the Bar D and the devastation that happened there. It is yet a horrific memory but a memory that needs to be forgotten - for that was then and this is now. Many of the Bar D kids, who grew to manhood there, still write, call, or come to visit. Those young men and woman who have filled the authors life with joyous times since the Bar D, continue to share their progress and affection with him. Those prophetic words, Never say Die, the flagship for No Matter What have well served the author and clients alike, it is now time to move on.
