The story behind the classic and universally recognized rhyme! This luminous picture book biography shines a light on the little-known poet and author of the beloved lullaby. Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are. Did you ever wonder who wrote that famous verse? In the days when most girls were brought up to run a home, Jane Taylor had a different kind of education in the English countryside, where she was inspired by nature and the stars, and dreamed of becoming a writer. But in the late 1700s, it was not considered proper for women to be writers. Jane and other female poets were shunned, unable to use their own names when published. But Jane did write, and she never forgot her love for the beauty of nature and the glow of stars, or her desire to write for children. Her published poetry became universally known for generations to come: Twinkle, twinkle little star. This lyrical and luminous biography shines a light on the unsung poet who wrote the words of our most enduring lullaby, and features stunning artwork reflecting the world, the stars, and the story behind the poem that we all know so well.

Books Synopsis

A master thief waited his whole life to acquire the most beautiful diamond in the world. When he heard it had been purchased, he spent three days trying to steal the rare jewel. He failed. Finally, the thief walked right up to the owner and asked, "How did you hide this precious jewel from me?" To which the owner replied, "I placed it where I knew you would never look—in your own pocket!" This insightful tale opens the first major book release from Gangaji—an American-born teacher who has influenced the lives of thousands of people through her public events. In The Diamond in Your Pocket, Gangaji describes our never-ending search as human beings to find fulfillment—which, paradoxically, already exists if only we will stop long enough to experience it. Readers join Gangaji to learn more about: How to let go of your need to control, and activate instead the choice of where you put your mind's attention Cultivating the courage to be vulnerable, so you can meet—and deeply merge with—the unknown How to unearth the roots of suffering—learn to stop replaying your life's dramatic stories over and over, and much more As long as you are searching for it, it cannot be found, " teaches Gangaji. Written as a series of short contemplations, The Diamond in Your Pocket shows you thought-by-thought how to stop the endless activity of your mind, and experience the brilliance and radiance of who you really are.

Books Synopsis

Wittgenstein's work is notoriously difficult to understand and, at least superficially, deals almost exclusively with obscure and technical problems in logic and the philosophy of language. He once asked rhetorically: "What is the use of philosophy ... if it does not improve your thinking about the important questions of everyday life?". This book explains how Wittgenstein's idea of the value of philosophy shaped his philosophical method and led him to talk and write about the abstruse questions he dealt with in most of his work. This is not just another introductory overview of Wittgenstein's philosophy. It is one of the few that provide such an overview while also referring constantly to ethics and religion. Moreover, its interpretation of Wittgenstein is far from orthodox, as standard treatments of his work disregard or downplay his claims about what he was doing and why. Duncan Richter takes him at his word, showing the connections between Wittgenstein's aims, the various subjects he worked on (psychology, religion, aesthetics, etc.), and the way in which he worked on them.

This book represents the compilation of papers presented at the second Atomic Force Microscopy/Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (AFM/STM) Symposium, held June 7 to 9, 1994, in Natick, Massachusetts, at Natick Research, Development and Engineering Center, now part ofU.S. Army Soldier Systems Command. As with the 1993 symposium, the 1994 symposium provided a forum where scientists with a common interest in AFM, STM, and other probe microscopies could interact with one another, exchange ideas and explore the possibilities for future collaborations and working relationships. In addition to the scheduled talks and poster sessions, there was an equipment exhibit featuring the newest state-of-the-art AFM/STM microscopes, other probe microscopes, imaging hardware and software, as well as the latest microscope-related and sample preparation accessories. These were all very favorably received by the meeting's attendees. Following opening remarks by Natick's Commander, Colonel Morris E. Price, Jr., and the Technical Director, Dr. Robert W. Lewis, the symposium began with the Keynote Address given by Dr. Michael F. Crommie from Boston University. The agenda was divided into four major sessions. The papers (and posters) presented at the symposium represented a broad spectrum of topics in atomic force microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and other probe microscopies.

Books Synopsis

With a unique combination of ancient and contemporary wisdom from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, The Diamond Cutter presents readers with empowering strategies for success in their work and personal lives. Geshe Michael Roach, one of the great teachers today of Tibetan Buddhism, has richly woven The Diamond Cutter in three layers. The first is a translation of selections from the Diamond Sutra itself, an ancient text comprised of conversations between the Buddha and his close disciple Subhuti. Considered a central work by Buddhists throughout the world, the Diamond Sutra has been the focus of much interpretation over the centuries. In the second layer, Geshe Michael quotes from some of the best commentaries of the Tibetan tradition. In the main text, the third layer, he uses both sutra and commentary as a jumping-off point for presenting his own teaching. Geshe Michael gives fresh insight into ancient wisdom by using examples from his own experience as one of the founders of the Andin International Diamond Corporation, which was started with capital of fifty thousand dollars and which today has annual sales in excess of one hundred million dollars. Much of the success of Andin has come from applying the business strategies presented in The Diamond Cutter. Geshe Michael's easy style and spiritual understanding make this work of timeless wisdom an invaluable source for those already familiar with, and those unfamiliar with, Tibetan Buddhism.

Books Synopsis

“Don Quixote looms so wonderfully above the skylines of literature, a gaunt giant on a lean nag, that the book lives and will live through his sheer vitality...The parody has become a paragon.”-Vladimir Nabokov “A more profound and powerful work than this is not to be met with...The final and greatest utterance of the human mind.”- Fyodor Dostoyevsky Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote is regarded not only as the first modern novel, but also as one of the most important works of fiction ever produced. The subtle and hopeful irony, resplendent variety of characters and its thoroughly entertaining sense of adventure and friendship has dazzled readers for more than four hundred years. It was published in Spain in two volumes, first in 1605 then followed by the second in 1615. Cervantes’ use of realism and everyday language in Don Quixote was revolutionary at the time, and its influence on the development of literature may only be surpassed by the work of Shakespeare. In the opening of this extraordinary book, Alonso Quijano, a noble living in sixteenth-century Spain, has become consumed with the act of reading, and subsequently assumes the identity of the chivalrous knights that he loves to read about. Transformed into Don Quixote, he embarks on his first ill-fated journey as a “knight”. The defeated Quixote returns home, to only prepare himself better for the next adventure of delusion. On his second journey Quixote has enlisted the peasant Sancho Panza to appropriate the role of his squire. Although the duo is ridiculously mismatched in every sense, their inextricable bond is one of the most fascinating of friendships ever created on paper. Between their disordered adventures -of battling windmills and herds of sheep and endless mishaps- are the stories of those who are encountered on the journey. The book eventually becomes a hall of mirrors, and Cervantes explores preconceptions of narrative, reliability, and morality that are strikingly modern. Ultimately, Quixote’s preposterous fantasies become haunting as the reader of this book will surely begin to question what is real and what is not. The story of Don Quixote has been adapted into numerous forms, including opera, musicals, ballets, music and film. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Don Quixote is both modern and readable.

Books Synopsis

In Cuts of a Diamond, Sandra Bicknell shows women how to turn even their most heartbreaking experiences into a thing of beauty by honoring their victories with a beautiful piece of jewelry that will remind them of their triumphs. Relationships can be hard. Sometimes women feel disillusioned, like the tides have turned against them and there is no one on their side who understands what they’re going through. Or maybe they ask themselves, “Why me?” or “What did I do wrong?” Women need to know that there is more to it than circumstance. In Cuts of a Diamond, Sandra Bicknell sets down her raw emotions and honest experiences in order to make a difference in readers’ lives. She calls for women to take back authority over their life. People cannot dictate what will or will not happen to them as their life unfolds, but they can change how they look at their experiences and how they let them affect their life. In her guide, Bicknell shows women how to change their outlook on life and then invites them to honor their victory with a beautiful piece of jewelry that will continue to remind them of their triumphs.

Books Synopsis

"Thousands of years ago, the devil found its way to Earth, landing up as a diamond. A monk, in an unstinted effort, shed blood around the diamond and protected it. His immediate disciples and their succeeding generations protected the diamond for years, and avoided displacing it by building an enclosed village around it. Until disaster struck in the form of an earthquake that destroyed the village… A few years after the earthquake, an archaeologist pockets the diamond and auctions it to a drug lord – but the real diamond is not with the drug lord. Soon, the monk returns to earth and finds in Krishna Khanna, an unassuming lad in the world of business, the man who would go on to save the world. Krishna then goes on a chase that takes him from India to Russia, and finally, to North Korea. Braving the odds of prison camps in North Korea's harsh terrains, with help in the form of his trusted friends, Krishna embarks on a journey to save the world. A lot is at stake: either Krishna finds the diamond and destroys it, or he fails and North Korea puts him to death – while the devil is unleashed and annihilates all of God's creations… "

Books Synopsis

Don Quixote is often named as the novel most likely to be on your shelf, but unread. It is almost as though the eponymous hero of the novel and wannabe knight is laying down a chivalric challenge. For Cervantes' epic tale of adventure, imagination and globetrotting is regarded as one of the first ever novels - and it retains all of its power today. Quixote is entranced by stories of chivalry and sets off around the world with his squire, Sancho Panza, to become a knight errant. The adventures become gradually more fanciful, including tilting at windmills and getting into fights with friars. At the same time, the relationship between Quixote and Panza goes through subtle changes. Don Quixote has been portrayed on screen many times, including most recently in Terry Gilliam's spoof movie 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote', starring Adam Driver and Stellan Skarsgard. In 2000, John Lithgow, Bob Hoskins and Isabella Rossellini starred in 'Don Quixote'. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616) was a Spanish writer whose epic novel 'Don Quixote' made his name. The story is regarded as the first modern novel and one of the greatest books of all time. As is often the case with writers and artists of his time, Cervantes spent most of his life in poverty. He left Spain for Rome in 1569 to work for a cardinal, before joining the Spanish Navy, being badly wounded in 1571, then being captured by Barbary pirates and held for five years before being ransomed. He worked as a purchasing agent, then a tax collector, and his first novel, 'La Galatea', was published in 1585. His other works included '12 Exemplary Novels', 'The Travails of Persiles and Sigismunda' and the epic poem 'Journey to Parnassus'. 'Don Quixote' was published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615.

A book for the naturally curious, as well as those seekers after scientific truths, it unravels both those things we take for granted, such as when you boil an egg, why does the yolk stay in the middle, or why is the sky blue, as well as questions which probe deeply, such as, what does an atom look like, or what was there before the beginning of time? if you were to write in the dust on the moon, how big would the letters have to be so you could see them from earth without a telescope? Drawing on the expertise of a team of enthusiastic scientists around the world, authoritative, entertaining, and often a touch humorous, it will appeal to anyone who's ever been curious about life on earth.
